Stewards of the Light Walk-a-Thon

The public is invited to join 240 second graders from the Hudson City School District and the Coxsackie-Athens School District as they walk across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge from opposite ends to meet in the middle.  This will demonstrate communities working together for a common cause—the restoration of the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse. Songwriter John Farrell will lead students in his new song, “So Your Light Will Continue to Shine,” at a picnic to be held at Cherry Ridge Farm near the bridge in Greenport, Columbia County.  Raindate May 28

Celebrate!

As part of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration, the year long exhibit Celebrate! at the Columbia County Museum features ways that Columbia County residents publicly and privately celebrate people, events, holidays and history.  A rare plaster Marquette of Robert Fulton, a stunning wedding ensemble, a stately tall case clock and a miniature flag made by Betsy Ross’s great granddaughter are amount the highlights. Also included are objects acquired this past year and objects specifically created for the Quadricentennial.

Hudson River Day

June 11- 12
The Hudson River Day relay flotilla is being led by heritage flagships such as the Onrust, the John J. Harvey fire boat, the Half Moon and the Clearwater. The ships are scheduled to stop in Hudson, Catskill, and Athens on June 11. The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater will dock in Hudson.

Watch the Relay Flotilla as it makes its way up the Hudson River to Hudson and Catskill, June 11 around noon on the lawn of Clermont State Historic Site http://www.friendsofclermont.org.  Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch. 

Hudson Waterfront Park around 6pm with the following ceremonies commencing:
June 11 -
5:30pm - Ghent Band will perform a concert for the public as the Half Moon and flotilla arrive in the Harbor
6pm - The ships arrive at the Park to a salute of sirens, cannon fire and boat whistles. A ribbon cutting at the Hudson Athens Lighthouse as they arrive and then a grand welcome from Mayor Scalera and other elected officials. (Refreshments will be available at the Hudson Power Boat Association)
7pm - Bi-planes from the Rhinebeck Aerodrome will perform a fly-over on the River.
9pm - Hudson-Athens Lighthouse will have its inaugural lighting of the Lighthouse which will continue throughout the Summer.

June 12 - school groups will tour the Clearwater until 12pm at which time the Clearwater will depart for its journey north to Castleton. Stop by the Greenport Conservation Area, off Joslen Blvd and watch the flotilla make its way up river. http://www.clctrust.org/

Canaan 250 Historic House Tour

The Canaan 250 Committee announces that it will hold a historic house tour of ten houses in the town of Canaan from 1-5pm. Featured houses will include a variety of residences throughout the town of Canaan, with early parts of many houses dating from the 1780’s and 1790’s with “modern” additions dating from the 1800’s. .

Houses to be viewed include:  The Squire Hiram Ford House in Red Rock, Three Warner brothers homes, two in Canaan Center and one in Queechy, The Asa Douglas House, The Shanty, The Hiram Johnson House. The Kirby/Best House, Turning Leaf , Capt. Joshua Palmer House, and The Bradley House.

Music at the Farm

In celebration of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial, all ages are welcome to Olana’s Farm Complex to enjoy live folk music performances.  Henry Hudson and De Halves Moon with Nanne and Ankie and The Hudson Crew from the Netherlands will perform their original songs in Dutch and English, retelling the story of Henry Hudson’s voyage to America in 1609.  These concerts will take place outside the Wagon House Education Center down at the Olana Farm Complex (inside the Education Center if inclement weather). Bring a blanket, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch; stay on the grounds to enjoy free children’s art activities or to explore the glorious Hudson River views! Kinderhook Historic Garden Tour

The Kinderhook Garden Club and the Historic Kinderhook Committee sponsor a Free lecture by noted landscape historian, Ellen McClelland Lesser, will take place at 9.30 am at in the Village of Kinderhook prior to the tour. Participants will receive a printed guide including a map and directions for 12 gardens. Gardens may be viewed at your own pace and chosen sequence. Kinderhook Garden Club members will be at each location to answer questions. The northern-most lighthouse on the Hudson River; the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse rises from the river like a tiny gem.  Tours offer visitors a peek into the life of the Brunner family, the last family to live at the lighthouse.  Visitors may enjoy a picnic at the provided tables or just walk around the lighthouse to enjoy the 360-degree view of the Hudson River, the Catskill Mountains, and the surrounding Columbia and Greene Counties.  In celebration of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial, the lighthouse will be illuminated during the Summer months.  Regularly scheduled tours are offered the second Saturday from July - October from 11am-3pm with water transportation by Hudson Cruises, Inc. from both the Waterfront Park, Hudson or the Riverfront Park, Athens on the 1/2 hour .

A discussion of the environmental implications of the Hudson River School paintings, view the new gallery exhibits at the home site, and make your own works of art inspired by real Hudson River views! 1-4pm;  All minors must be accompanied by an adult. The Namesake Celebration

A waterfront festival featuring:
Tours of the replica ship, Henry Hudson’s Half Moon, available on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special group tours may be available on Monday, July 27. To inquire about a group tour, contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
Crafts demonstrations in period costume including children’s games, Native American technology, and other hands-on activities.
Information and sales booths. A special section of the park will be set aside for tourism literature, including brochures from historic sites and Columbia County towns. Organizations working to improve the river habitat will be available to explain their programs. Souvenirs of the Quad and a special commemorative booklet will be available.
Awarding of the prize in the Henry Hudson Look-Alike Contest.
Children’s activities will include circus workshops with members of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, a performance by Dutch folksingers Nonne and Ankie, and entertainment by Roger the Jester and Mr. Twisty.
Fun on the River—Ferry service to the Village of Athens and visits to the historic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse will be offered. Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society.
Walking tours of Promenade Hill and Hudson’s historic districts are encouraged. Walking tour brochures will be available.
A Saturday Night Extravaganza with a gala concert featuring Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, grandson of legendary folk singer Pete Seeger, fireworks, and a light show.

Henry Hudson Quadricentennial Quadathlon

To celebrate Henry Hudson’s voyage up the river that bears his name the Quadathlon offers participants an opportunity to commemorate the historic Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial. Run, swim, cycle, and paddle over, along, and on the beautiful Hudson River. In teams or as individuals entrants run west from the town of Greenport over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge high above the Hudson River and into the village of Catskill. After a short out and back swim in the Catskill Creek cyclists will pedal through Catskill, along the west bank of the Hudson River,  into the village of Athens. There, canoeists and kayakers will set afloat on the Hudson and paddle back east around the historic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse to the finish at the Hudson Waterfront Park.

Tug & Barge Tour
