The Underground Railroad

A one-hour program in tribute to the Underground Railroad.  Quilter Irene Wiley joined with other local artists will explain the secret codes used in songs, quilts, crafts, poetry and how it helped slaves and those assisting them in the Underground Railroad.  This family event is designed to educate all ages.

Winter Snowshoe Walk

2-3pm
Experience Mud Creek on snowshoes!  Beginners and advanced snowshoe hikers are welcome.  A brief snowshoe lesson will be provided before we hit the trail to admire the beauty of nature in winter and search for signs of wildlife.  A limited number of snowshoes are available.  Registration is recommended in order to reserve snowshoes.  The hike is a snow or no snow event.

Snowshoe Historic Carriage Roads

Snowshoe along the carriage drives to see the transition from farm to forest, skirt along the edge of North Meadow and see beautiful views of the Catskills from Ridge Road.  An educator from the Olana Partnership will discuss the history of the carriage roads and land use at Olana.  Registration required by noon on Friday, February 10.

8th Annual Build a Blue Bird Box

1:00-2:30pm or 3:00-4:30pm
Celebrate the arrival of spring by building a nesting box for the Eastern bluebird.  Using pre-cut lumber with all materials and tools provided, everyone gets to make and take home a bluebird nesting box.  In the springtime in Columbia County, some birds (like robins) build an open nest, but others prefer nesting in cavities of decayed trees or stumps.  Cavity-dwelling birds, like bluebirds, will substitute a nest box for a tree cavity.  Registration required by noon on March 23.

CLC’s Country Barbecue

The Columbia Land Conservancy’s Country Barbecue which attracts over 1,000 people is CLC’s major fund raising event of the year.  Throughout the history of the event, it has been held at various properties throughout the County that have been permanently protected with an easement through CLC.  The barbecue is a celebration of rural culture.  Attendees enjoy fresh food as well as demonstrations and activities highlighting local wildlife, agriculture, and rural traditions.  Entertainment in past years has included musicians, circus performers, and a live auction.  Additionally, there have been hands-on-kids activities that incorporate nature, the outdoors, and crafts.  Reservations required.
