Led by Naomi Goldberg Haas, director of New York City – based Dances For A Variable Population, based in lower Manhattan, makes concert dances with diverse communities and professional dancers ranging from children who thought dance was only on MTV, to persons with disabilities who thought dance was denied them, to seniors who thought dance was beyond them.  Through performances and collaborative community programs, the company aims to erase the border between dancer and non-dancer, returning dance to its initial wellspring: joy.

“Seats of Shaker Innovation: The Peculiar Grace of a Shaker Chair”

Whether as a source for Danish modern design; as a subject of painting, photographs, and sculpture; or simply as a popular product to be copied, Shaker chairs have inspired a host of manufacturers, designers, and artists.  Sharon Koomler, an author and lecturer on Shaker life and furniture, will explore the stories of these influences and noted Shaker furniture scholar Tim Rieman will bring along examples of chairs from the Museum’s collection and elsewhere to discuss.
