Crazy Horse
Movie
7:30pm
$7/adults, $5/TSL members & students
A film by Frederick Wiseman. Celebrated documentary director Frederick Wiseman spent ten weeks with his camera exploring one of the most mythic places dedicated to women, the Crazy Horse Paris. This legendary Parisian cabaret, founded in 1951 by Alain Bernardin, has become over the years the Parisian nightlife “must” for locals as well as any visitors, ranking alongside the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Wiseman’s impeccable eye allows us to enter into this intriguing international temple of the Parisian cabaret world and to discover what makes the Crazy Horse tick: elegance, perfectionism and a grueling schedule with 2 shows a night and 3 on Saturdays, 7 days a week.

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth
Movie
5:30pm
$7/adults, $5/TSL members & students
Chad Freidrichs’s film tells the story of the wholesale changes that took place in the American city in the decades after World War II, through the lens of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing development in St. Louis. At the film’s historical center is an analysis of the massive impact of the 1949 Housing Act which initiated the so-called urban renewal program and prompted the process of mass suburbanization, which emptied American cities of their residents, business and industry. The residents of Pruitt-Igoe were among the hardest hit. The domestic turmoil wrought on the residents by punitive public welfare policies, the frustrating interactions with a paternalistic and cash-strapped Housing Authority, and the downward spiral of vacancy, vandalism and crime, led to resident protest and action during the 1969 Rent Strike, the first in the history of public housing. Despite its complex history, Pruitt-Igoe has often been stereotyped as an argument against Modernist architecture or public assistance programs. The Pruitt-Igoe Myth seeks to set the record straight, to re-evaluate the rumors and the stigma, to implode the myth.

They Call It Myanmar: Lifting The Curtain
Movie
7:30pm
$7/adults, $5/TSL members & students
The story of Burma, told with stunning footage shot clandestinely over a 2-year period by filmmaker Robert H. Lieberman, provides an astonishing and intimate look inside at what has been one of the most isolated countries on the planet, lifting the curtain on the everyday life of the people in this land that has been held hostage by a brutal and superstitious military regime for 48 years. A revealing interview with Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi conducted just after her most recent release from house arrest is interwoven with extensive interviews and interactions with Burmese people from all around this incredibly diverse nation. The film, culled from over 120 hours of striking images, is an impressionistic journey that leads across the vastness of Burma. It traces the history of Burma from its beginnings in the ancient city of Bagan, through colonial times, recent uprisings, the devastating Cyclone Nargis that killed 150,000 people, and up to the present day.

Movie

A film by Sophie Fiennes. Anselm Kiefer’s monumental body of work occupies a fascinating place in the canon of late 20th Century art. In 1993, Kiefer left Buchen, Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory near Barjac. From 2000, he began constructing a series of elaborate installations there. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute extends over 350,000 square meters and is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios that link to a network of underground tunnels dug out by Kiefer, which run underneath pavilions built to house paintings and installations. An underground pool at the cul-de-sac of a tubular iron tunnel is embedded with a crypt which backs onto a 20m-tiered concrete amphitheater. There are caves and woods, an open landscape of concrete towers – assembled like so many card houses – and secluded, private spaces.

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth
Movie
4pm

Royal Southern Brotherhood
9pm
Before they even hit a chord, Royal Southern Brotherhood have your attention. In the US South, where music is religion, two rock ‘n’ roll bloodlines tower above all others. The mere mention of the Allman and Neville Brothers casts a magic spell. These aren’t just bands, they’re gods, and with a lineup that includes Cyril Neville and Devon Allman, Royal Southern Brotherhood come pre-loaded with expectations. Don’t worry: they can match them. The family tree might be auspicious, but this new band trades on talent, not genealogy. It’s not about rock history: it’s about the here-and-now.

They Call It Myanmar: Lifting The Curtain
Movie
5:30pm

The Trapps
8pm
The Trapps are an American band tapping the roots of Americana, Folk, and Rock and Roll with a strong emphasis on “the song” and lyrical fiber. All at once they grab you with powerful harmonies like the Jayhawks or rivet you with a high intensity jam like the Black Crowes, but for this band, it is never done loosely or in a way that pulls the listener away from the essence and presentation of the song itself. Full of risk and heart, they weave universal themes into a musical fabric that is entirely original yet feels like you have known the sound your entire life.

In an anonymous motel room on the U.S./Mexico border, a Ciudad Juarez hit man speaks. He has killed hundreds of people and is an expert in torture and kidnapping. He was simultaneously on the payroll of the Mexican drug cartels and a commander of the Chihuahua State Police. There is currently a $250,000 contract on his life and he lives as a fugitive, though he has never been charged with a crime in any country. With his face obscured by a black mesh hood, he tells his story to the camera inside the very hotel room he once used to hold and torture kidnapped victims. Aided only by a magic marker and notepad, which he uses to illustrate and diagram his words, the scenario describes, in astounding detail, his life of crime, murder, abduction and torture. Directed by Italian documentarian Gianfranco Rosi.

Gerhard Richter Painting

Directed by Corinna Belz. One of the world’s greatest living painters, the German artist Gerhard Richter has spent over half a century experimenting with a tremendous range of techniques and ideas, addressing historical crises and mass media representation alongside explorations of chance procedures. The first glimpse inside his studio in decades, “Gerhard Richter Painting” is exactly that: a thrilling document of the 79-year-old’s creative process, juxtaposed with rare archival footage and intimate conversations with his critics and collaborators. From our fly-on-the-wall perspective, we watch Richter create a series of large-scale abstract canvasses, using fat brushes and a massive squeegee to apply (and then scrape off) layer after layer of brightly colored paint. This mesmerizing footage, of a highly charged process of creation and destruction, turns Belz’s portrait of an artist into work of art itself.

In the springtime in Columbia County, some birds (like robins) build an open nest, but others prefer nesting in cavities of decayed trees or stumps. Cavity-dwelling birds, like bluebirds, will substitute a nest box for a tree cavity. Registration required by noon on March 23.

Two brothers decide to form a band, adapting the blues, folk and other roots-music sounds they loved as kids into their own evocative sound and twining their voices in the sort of high-lonesome harmony blend for which sibling singers are often renowned. Most everyone has been the target of practical jokes, and most have been out on blind dates. Oliver Goldsmith bases his 1773 comedy on two such incidents, creating a complicated, convoluted plot based on miscommunication and mistaken identities. At the same time, Goldsmith explores a series of ethical and aesthetic issues. One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s fine play offers a celebration of chaos, courtship, and the dysfunctional family.

Susanna braves the most savage storm in English literature with breathtaking hilarity and heartache, honoring the beautiful language of Lear while taking a bit of poetic license.
