Dion Boucicault’s London Assurance
National Theatre of London (NT Live)
7pm
Live from the world-renowned National Theatre in London, TSL brings you London Assurance – Dion Boucicault’s comic masterpiece. Sir Harcourt Courtly is lured away from the epicenter of fashionable London by the promise of a rich and beautiful bride, Grace, several decades his junior. Arriving at Oak Hall, Gloucestershire, he marvels at this rural Venus until her charms are eclipsed by her hearty cousin, the foxhunting Lady Gay Spanker. Meanwhile his disguised son turns up in flight from his creditors and falls head over heels for Grace. When Lady Spanker discovers the young couple, she needs little prompting from the visiting chancellor Dazzle to lead Sir Harcourt astray. Dion Boucicault, the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, wrote the brilliantly funny London Assurance in 1841 and thereby created – in Sir Harcourt and Lady Spanker – two of the great comic roles of the English stage.

Fern Hunting among These Picturesque Mountains: Frederic Edwin Church in Jamaica
11am-4pm
In 1865, Frederic Church, an avid traveler with a special passion for the tropics, journeyed to Jamaica. This was unlike his previous expeditions, as he and his wife, Isabel, were escaping from intense personal grief: the loss of their two young children. Throwing himself into the exploration of documentation of the island, the renowned artist produced a variety of works ranging from delicate pen sketches of palm trees to oil sketches of the atmospheric Blue Mountains and brilliant sunsets. The importance of the trip is reflected in the number of studies Church chose to mount, frame, and display at Olana, which became a major attraction for visitors to his home. The best of the related sketches and paintings from Jamaica comprise the exhibit.

Movie: Stonewall Uprising
7:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/members
June 28, 1969 – NYC police raid a Greenwich Village mafia-run gay bar, The Stonewall Inn. For the first time, patrons refuse to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a 3-day riot that launches the Gay Rights Movement. Told by Stonewall patrons, Village Voice reporters and the cop who led the raid, Stonewall Uprising compellingly recalls the bad old days when psychoanalysts equated homosexuality with mental illness and advised aversion therapy, and even lobotomies; public service announcements warned youngsters against predatory homosexuals; and police entrapment was rampant.

Movie: Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo
5:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/members
This movie delves into the ineffable mystery of Japan’s age-old love affair with insects. A labyrinthine mediation on nature, beauty, philosophy, and Japanese culture that might just make you question if your “instinctive” repulsion to bugs is merely a trick of Western conditioning. Like a detective story, the film untangles the web of influences behind Japan’s captivation with insects. The film takes side trips to Zen temples and Buddhist Shrines, nature preserves and art museums in its quest for the inspirations that moved Japan into this fascination.

This portrait of Washington super lobbyist Jack Abramoff – from his early years as a gung-ho member of the GOP political machine to his final reckoning as a disgraced, imprisoned pariah – confirms the adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. A tale of international intrigue with Indian casinos, Russian spies, Chinese sweatshops, and a mob-style killing in Miami, this is the story of the way money corrupts our political process. Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney once again wields the tools of his trade with the skill of a master.

Dion Boucicault’s London Assurance
National Theatre of London (NT Live)
1pm

Bells are Ringing
8:30pm
“Bells are Ringing” is a nostalgic look at the New York of the 1950s when to have an answering service counted as a major status symbol. Re-creating her Broadway role of flibbertigibbet telephone operator Ella Peterson employed at Susanswerphone, a hole-in-the-wall answering service run by her cousin Sue (Jean Stapleton) this was Judy Holliday’s last screen appearance. Met Opera Summer Encore

Come see an encore screening of this stunning classical Met production. One of the most popular operas of all time, Carmen “is about sex, violence, and racism – and its corollary: freedom,” says Olivier Award-winning director Richard Eyre about his new production of Bizet’s drama. “It is one of the inalienably great works of art. It’s sexy, in every sense. And I think it should be shocking.” Elina Garanca sings the seductive gypsy of the title for the first time at the Met, opposite Roberto Alagna as the obsessed Don Jose. Rising maestro Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts.
