Movie: Breath Made Visible
7:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/members
Directed by Ruedi Gerber, Breath Made Visible is the first feature length film about the life and career of Anna Halprin, the American dance pioneer who has helped redefine our notion of modern art with her belief in dance’s power to teach, heal, and transform at all ages of life. This cinematic portrait blends recent interviews with counter-parts such as the late Merce Cunningham; archival footage, including footage of her establishment of the first multiracial dance company in the US; and excerpts of current performances such as Parades and Changes at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. The film weaves a stunning, inspiring account of one of the most important cultural icons in modern dance.

Fern Hunting among These Picturesque Mountains: Frederic Edwin Church in Jamaica
Exhibition Opening
11am-4pm
In 1865, Frederic Church, an avid traveler with a special passion for the tropics, journeyed to Jamaica. This was unlike his previous expeditions, as he and his wife, Isabel, were escaping from intense personal grief: the loss of their two young children. Throwing himself into the exploration of documentation of the island, the renowned artist produced a variety of works ranging from delicate pen sketches of palm trees to oil sketches of the atmospheric Blue Mountains and brilliant sunsets. The importance of the trip is reflected in the number of studies Church chose to mount, frame, and display at Olana, which became a major attraction for visitors to his home. The best of the related sketches and paintings from Jamaica comprise the exhibit.

3rd Annual Water Chestnut Removal
8am-12pm
Join us for an educational program and work day on the water as we remove this non-native, highly invasive species. The densely growing Water Chestnut can effectively choke a body of water and shade out native aquatic plants, limiting recreation and habitat. Water Chestnut must be removed every year before they can drop another round of seeds. Learn how to remove these aquatic plants and dispose of them properly. We’ll pull out the plants from the shore, wearing waters, and from the water by canoe. We’ll provide waders (in a variety of sizes), gloves, and canoes/kayaks. If you have your own, bring them along! Please wear old clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Lunch and beverages provided. Call Jenny Brinker to register.

Movie: Alice Neel
7:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/members
Written and Directed by Andrew Neel, Alice Neel is the story of one of the great portrait painters of the 20th century. Neel reinvented the genre of portraiture by expressing the inner landscape of her varied sitters, among them Andy Warhol, Annie Sprinkle, Bella Abzug, and Allen Ginsburg. Painting a diverse cross-section of humanity, from Communist Party leaders to art world personalities to her neighbors in Spanish Harlem, Neel created a boy of work that serves as a social document of New York and America in the 20th century. The film tells the story of Neel’s life, exploring the struggles she faced as a woman in art, a single mother, and a painter who defied convention.

Fern Hunting among These Picturesque Mountains: Frederic Edwin Church in Jamaica

$7.50/general, $5/members
June 28, 1969 – NYC police raid a Greenwich Village mafia-run gay bar, The Stonewall Inn. For the first time, patrons refuse to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a 3-day riot that launches the Gay Rights Movement. Told by Stonewall patrons, Village Voice reporters and the cop who led the raid, Stonewall Uprising compellingly recalls the bad old days when psychoanalysts equated homosexuality with mental illness and advised aversion therapy, and even lobotomies; public service announcements warned youngsters against predatory homosexuals; and police entrapment was rampant.

Fern Hunting among These Picturesque Mountains: Frederic Edwin Church in Jamaica

This portrait of Washington super lobbyist Jack Abramoff – from his early years as a gung-ho member of the GOP political machine to his final reckoning as a disgraced, imprisoned pariah – confirms the adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. A tale of international intrigue with Indian casinos, Russian spies, Chinese sweatshops, and a mob-style killing in Miami, this is the story of the way money corrupts our political process. Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney once again wields the tools of his trade with the skill of a master.

Many fans consider this the pinnacle of the Marx Brothers’ 13 films. It features Groucho, Harpo & Chico infiltrating high society in the guise of opera promoters. Packed with great lines (remember “there ain’t no Sanity Claus?”) it includes the most memorable routines (remember the crowded stateroom?) and culminates in a lavish production number that has Harpo swinging ape-like high above the New York opera house stage to the accompaniment of Verdi’s music.

"Do You Know Any of These Good Folks?" Photographing the Shakers
7pm
$5
This illustrated lecture about the Shakers and their peculiar relationship with photography by Jerry Grant, the Museum’s Director of Research, augments the exhibition “VISIONS OF MOUNT LEBANON.” Though the Shakers saw advantages to the newly invented medium, and sold tourist photographs in their stores, problems of representation, of communal vs. personal property, and the potential for favoritism or celebrity surrounding the photographs caused the leaders of the Shaker Church to outlaw most photographs….for a while. Come hear the rest of the story.
