Altered States: John Sideli

Mon, Wed-Sat 11am-5pm
Altered States will feature approximately 25 mixed media constructions made from old objects and antique artifacts that the artist collects on his travels.  While the work is historically linked to the densely adorned “cabinets of curiosities” of the 16th-18th century, and the surreal box assemblages of Joseph Cornell, Mr. Sideli’s constructions are much more sculptural in nature, and sparingly composed.

Movie: Harlan: In The Shadow of Jew Süss

7:30pm
$7.50/adults, $5/TSL members and students
A film by Feliz Moeller.  With never-before-seen archival footage, unearthed film excerpts, rare home movies, and new interviews, Harlan is a searing portrait of the controversial filmmaker and an eye-opening examination of World War II film history.  It shows how Veit Harlan’s family – especially the youngest generation – struggles even today with the dark myth of their artistic immortality.  It’s the story of a German family from the Third Reich to the present, one that is marked by reckoning, denial and liberation.  In German with English subtitles.

Movie: Theater of War

5:30pm
$7.50/adults, $5/TSL members and students
A movie by filmmaker John Walter, based on Tony Kushner’s adaptation of Bertold Brecht’s masterpiece, Mother Courage and her Children.  It was presented by Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline by The Public Theater/NY Shakespeare Festival in Central Park in 2006.  Instead of turning the movie into a star-studded vehicle for Streep and Kline, Walter digs into Brecht’s motives and politics to unearth the playwright’s famed and famously clever testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee – the day after which he fled from the US.  Theater of War is about war, capitalism, Marxism, the anti-communism hysteria of the 1950’s, and one literary genius’s ability to make art of it all.

Movie: Mid-August Lunch

7:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/TSL members
The charismatic Gianni Di Gregorio stars in his directorial debut, Mid-August Lunch – an utterly charming tale of good food, feisty ladies, and unlikely friendships during a very Roman holiday.  Broke and armed with only a glass of wine and a wry sense of humor, middle-aged Gianni resides with his 93-year-old mother in the ancient apartment.  The condo debts are mounting, but if Fianni looks after the building manager’s mother during Italy’s biggest summer holiday, his debt will be forgiven.  This lovely film is warmly vibrant family drama and a delicately balanced comedy of manners.

Movie: The Sun Behind the Clouds

5:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/TSL members
This film by Ritu Sarin and Tanzing Sonam updates the struggle for Tibetan independence, focusing on the March 2008 demonstration against Chinese rule, the largest ever since the 1959 take-over of that nation.  The Dalai Lama, living in exile in Northern India, is interviewed extensively and given the opportunity to explain his “middle way,” a compromise he has been unsuccessful in getting the Chinese to accept.

Movie: Behind the Burly Q

5:30pm
$7.50/general, $5/TSL members
Burlesque and vaudeville acts were America’s most popular form of live entertainment in the first half of the 20th century, until cinema drove them from the mainstream.  To add insult to injury, the art of burlesque became vilified and misunderstood and has, as a result, been largely left out of our cultural history.  By telling the intimate and surprising stories from its golden age through the women (and men!) who lived, breathed, and were burlesque, Behind the Burly Q reveals the true story of burlesque, even as it experiences a renaissance.

Based on Charles Perrault’s grisly fairytale, Bluebeard tells the story of young Marie-Catherine, child bride to an aristocratic ogre with a reputation for murdering his wives.  The controversial director Catherine Breillat (The Last Mistress) brings her personal touch to this classic tale, a surprising favorite of good little French girls since the 1950’s.  Princess Marie-Catherine must employ all her cunning to outwit her husband and escape a potentially unpleasant fate.
