Movie: Dancing Across Borders

7:30pm
$7/adults, $5/TSL members and students
Dancing Across Borders chronicles the intimate and triumphant story of Sokvannara Sar, who was discovered by Anne Bass on a trip to Angkor Wat, Cambodia, in 2000 and brought to the ballet stage in America.  A longtime patron of dance in the U.S., Bass arranged for Sy to visit New York and audition for the prestigious School of the American Ballet (SAB).  What unfolds is a tentative negotiation between Sy and the world of American ballet and culture – from the serene countryside of Southeast Asia to the halls of SAB, to the stage of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle.  The film follows Sy’s unusual development as a dancer and offers a remarkable behind-the-scenes look into the world of American ballet.  At its heart, Dancing Across Borders is an extraordinary story of growth, adaptation, and belonging as well as of the development of talent and the mastery of an art form.

Altered States: John Sideli

Mon, Wed-Sat 11am-5pm
Altered States will feature approximately 25 mixed media constructions made from old objects and antique artifacts that the artist collects on his travels.  While the work is historically linked to the densely adorned “cabinets of curiosities” of the 16th-18th century, and the surreal box assemblages of Joseph Cornell, Mr. Sideli’s constructions are much more sculptural in nature, and sparingly composed.

Happy Earth Day, Hudson River!

10am-12pm
April marks the Shad run in the Hudson River, and shad, as well as sturgeon, were important fishing industries in the Hudson River.  Pollution of the river and over fishing of these species has destroyed these industries, and highlighted the need to care for our river.  2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a reminder of the need to respect our planet.  Celebrate the opening of the exhibition “Inked Over” by creating a fish and printed scales, made from recycled materials.

5:30pm
$7.50/adults, $5/TSL members and students
A powerful crime drama set on the streets of Jaffa’s (Israel) Ajami neighborhood – a melting pot of culture and conflicting views, among them Jews, Muslims, and Christians.  The story is told through the eyes of a cross-section of the city’s inhabitants while the film’s narrative shifts back and forth in time.  As the movie unfolds we witness a dramatic collision of different worlds and the often tragic consequences of what can happen when people who see themselves as each other’s enemies lives as neighbors.  In Hebrew and Arabic with English subtitles.

Build a Blue Bird Box

1-2:30pm or 3-4:30pm
Back by popular demand!  Celebrate the arrival of spring and build a nesting box for the Eastern bluebird.  Using pre-cut lumber with ALL materials and tools provided, everyone gets to make and take home a bluebird nest box.  In the springtime in Columbia County, some birds (like robins) build an open nest, but others prefer nesting in cavities in decayed trees or stumps.  Cavity-dwelling birds, like bluebirds, will substitute a nest box for a tree cavity.  Natural nest sites have disappeared as weakened or dying trees are removed from our landscape.  This program is very popular and space is limited, so please register by 4/16 with Jenny Brinker.

Alan Bennett’s “The Habit of Art”

7pm
Live from the world-renowned National Theatre in London, TSL brings you The Habit of Art, a new play by Alan Bennett.  The play is about W.H. Auden (1907-1973) and composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), two Englishmen who lived in Brooklyn Heights in the 1940’s.  Bennet makes use of a play within a play format and leads his characters into an imagined encounter where they discuss the power of the creative spirit and come to the conclusion that what matters is the work.  The production has been the hottest ticket in London and has been sold out for months.  Now, it is the hottest ticket in Hudson.

Alan Bennett’s “The Habit of Art”

1pm

Movie: Harlan: In The Shadow of Jew Süss

7:30pm
$7.50/adults, $5/TSL members and students
A film by Feliz Moeller.  With never-before-seen archival footage, unearthed film excerpts, rare home movies, and new interviews, Harlan is a searing portrait of the controversial filmmaker and an eye-opening examination of World War II film history.  It shows how Veit Harlan’s family – especially the youngest generation – struggles even today with the dark myth of their artistic immortality.  It’s the story of a German family from the Third Reich to the present, one that is marked by reckoning, denial and liberation.  In German with English subtitles.

Movie: Theater of War

5:30pm
$7.50/adults, $5/TSL members and students
A movie by filmmaker John Walter, based on Tony Kushner’s adaptation of Bertold Brecht’s masterpiece, Mother Courage and her Children.  It was presented by Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline by The Public Theater/NY Shakespeare Festival in Central Park in 2006.  Instead of turning the movie into a star-studded vehicle for Streep and Kline, Walter digs into Brecht’s motives and politics to unearth the playwright’s famed and famously clever testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee – the day after which he fled from the US.  Theater of War is about war, capitalism, Marxism, the anti-communism hysteria of the 1950’s, and one literary genius’s ability to make art of it all.
